KAVB Symposium: Plant names, global challenges
Amsterdam, October 11th - 13th, 2010

In 2010 the Royal General Bulbgrowers' Association (KAVB) in the Netherlands celebrates its 150th anniversary. Founded in 1860 the association started with organizing flower shows and it was only some decades later that they started to register varieties of bulbous species. Correct names and precise description of the variety characteristics were considered to be important for fair trade and correct treatment during storage and preparation of the flower bulbs. Since then the KAVB obtained the status of national and international registration authority for a broad spectrum of bulb species and closely works together with private and governmental organizations who are also active in the field of registration of ornamentals.

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary the KAVB board decided to organize an international symposium with the theme: "Plant names, global challenges". This symposium will be held in Amsterdam from Monday October 11th to Wednesday October 13th, 2010 and includes one day for bulb company visits, one day with presentations of invited speakers and one day visit to Hortifair.

The position and relations of private registration systems, plant breeders rights registration and trade marks will be enlightened by invited expert speakers from i.e. the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality; UPOV; CPVO; the Dutch Board for Plant Varieties and the Dutch Bureau for the registration of trade marks. The different intellectual property systems i.e. plant breeders rights and patent rights also will be included in the presentations and discussions.

Plant breeders, growers, wholesalers, their organisations, scientists and employees of registration authorities are kindly invited to participate in this symposium. Pre-registration is possible by sending an email to Mrs. Saskia Bodegom (Bodegom@KAVB.nl).
