Double form of nivalis L., February-March flowering. Leaves semi-erect to erect, 6-12 x 0.5-0.8 cm, glaucescent, margins flat to subrevolte. Scape ca erect, 6.5-12.5 cm. Spathe arched to erect, linear to lanceolate. Pedical ca. erect. Outer segments three to five, shallowly concave, 17-23 mm, l:w approx. 2:1, base unguiculate, apex often pinched. Inner segments in alternating whorls, 12-21, the outermost and innermost frequently aberrant, l:w approx. 3:2; sinus equilateral, small mark on apical 1/4, a small V or U, of uniform widht or with the arm-ends expanded. Anthers present, deformed. Ovary narrowly conical, l:w variable but often approx. 3:2. A name occasionally encountered that fits here is 'Carina'. Representing a normal G. nivalis 'Flore Pleno', it was selected for heaving four outer segments (pers. comm. D. Gardiner 1996), but it is not constant in this character. |
