Description |
Grey green leaves, loose, one-sided racemes of 16-21 two-toned flowers in sky-blue to light purplish-blue. Named after collector Steohanie Joseph. Collected in Spain. The 5-7 basal leaves are narrowly linear and up to 25 × 6.5 cm. The erect to barely spreading scapes (one or two per bulb) are glabrous grey-green above, tinged purple below, and bear tubular-campanulate flowers. Outward facing only when fully open and held on slender stalks 1.5-2 cm long, subtended by a single tapering, 1.9 cm long and purple-stained. The flower is narrowly bell-shaped, 1.5 cm long, the upper free portion of the fused perianth spreading, 1 cm across, with the lobes slightly reflexed at the tip. The perianth tube is a strong blue in the lower half, pale blue above but becoming more purplish-blue as the flower ages; the lobes are edged pale-blue and their midveins are bright purple-blue. The pale-blue stamens are in two rows of three, deeply inserted within the throat, their little balls of pale-yellow pollen just visible. A blunt-tipped, pale-blue style extends only to the lower anthers. |
