Description |
Erect, 30-60 cm, often branched, bulbiferous stems that generally bear one to three upright, 3-5 cm, open, bell-shaped flowers. The white, yellow, pink, or purple petals have a centralized, dark-colored circular or triangular blotch, often surrounded by bright yellow, directly above and adjacent to the white base, which is fainty to heavily overlaid with vertical reddish or purple dashes, and scantily hairy above the gland. The chevron-shaped (sometimes crescent-shaped) gland is densely hairy, with short orange, rusty, brownish, or reddish hairs, and is not depressed. The portion of the petal below the gland (including the claw) is smooth and almost always marked with reddish, purplish red, or purple. The upper petal margin is typically round, with an entire to minutely toothed edge. The outsides of the flowers are frequently the same color as the insides, with the pattern showing faintly through. The narrow, pointed sepals are straight, recurbed, or coiled, smooth, usually with a dark basal eyelike blotch that is visible between the petal claws. The basal pattern of both petals and sepals is usually similar. The linear, oblong anthers are cream, pink, or pale lavender in color, obtuse at the apex, and equal to the filament in length. The erect capsules are linear, three-angled, 5-6 cm long, with an acute apex. The linear, 15-25 cm basal leaf is generally withering by anthesis, and the stem has a cauline leaf and bracts. |
